Where the Pharaohs Dwell...
"Egypt is the gift of Nile" wrote Herodotus, and Giza Cotton is the gift from Egypt to the rest of the world.
It will be surprising to know that native cotton in Egypt, existing since ancient times was actually of poor quality. Egypt was never reputed for cotton – it was famous for its flax (linen). It was only when Modern Egypt’s founder, Mohamad Aly experimented with several foreign strains of cotton, did the country gradually begin growing more and more of the exquisite cotton that it is known for today. The rest of course is history, since Egypt is now considered the undisputed leader in premium cotton crop.
Even today, all cotton grown in Egypt is not of exquisite quality. It does produce some short and medium staple cottons. However, the Giza variety of Egyptian cotton refers to the long & extra-long staple cotton production of Egypt. You could say Giza is the reigning king of Egyptian cottons. All of 33mm, these extra-long staple fibers is what the luxurious and very fine Egyptian Giza cotton stands for. Known for its soft, silky and very breathable texture, it’s quite unlike any other cotton because of the way it is produced – hand picked not machine harvested.
Grown along the River Nile, the Giza variety is the reason for the celebrity status of all Egyptian cotton. It comes in a variety of qualities, such as Giza 86, 89, 90, 45, with Giza 45 being the most premium. Used largely by luxury brands because of its exclusivity and price, this cotton creates strong, flawless & unmatched fabrics. Famed among connoisseurs across the world, fabrics woven from this cotton are the fabrics of choice for bespoke cotton shirts and tailored apparels. You will always find Egytptian Giza cotton shirts among the exclusive range of any good shirt brand.
Hence it comes as no surprise that almost all of Vitruvien’s custom made cotton shirts are made from this exquisite fabric.
